The nation's leading authority on juvenile homicide spoke to students in Upshur County today.

Author and T.V. personality Phil Chalmers started at Buckhannon Upshur Middle School to talk about topics from why teens kill to bullying, suicide and substance abuse.

Chalmers said everyone can make a difference in their community; it all starts with education.

"Parents it's time to start knowing what your kids are doing, know who they're hanging out with, and really get involved. You can longer put them on cruise control because they will get devoured in this culture. So it's all of us working together and educating the public," said Chalmers.

Chalmers has been studying youth culture, juvenile homicide and juvenile mass murder for more than 30 years. He is the author of "Inside the Mind of a Teen Killer" and "The Encyclopedia of Teen Killers."

According to his website, Chalmers has interviewed over 200 teen killers and school shooters, along with numerous serial killers, mass murderers and sexual predators in order to understand the minds of the offenders and to explore why they killed, and if society could have stopped them.

He also spoke to high school students and prevention resource officers.

Chalmers will appear on a show called "Killer Kids" on A&E.
