WV Secretary of State’s Office adds more online services

Posted: Updated:

The West Virginia Secretary of State's Office has added the ability to make Uniform Commercial Code filings online as well as performing UCC searches.

Since the service launched Oct. 1, more than 440 customers have submitted online UCC filings, according to the Secretary of State's Office.

Banks file UCC financing statements with the Secretary of State when they give loans to consumers or small businesses who use goods or commercial or farm property as collateral.

The Uniform Commercial Code was first developed in the 1940s, and the lengthy act was developed to synchronize state laws as well as to allow individual states to pass laws to address their unique circumstances because of the increasing frequency of interstate commerce.

The West Virginia Secretary of State's UCC online system will enable customers to submit UCC financing statements to the Secretary of State's Office, and the system also will enable customers to search the UCC database as well as to order certified and non-certified searches or download documents directly.

"This new online UCC system will especially help those in the banking industry," Secretary of State Natalie Tennant said in a news release. "When a UCC filing is made, customers can make their payment conveniently and securely with a credit card or eCheck.

"It allows people to find out the information they need and file important documents without having to stand in a line or make a trip to the post office."

Tennant explained that immediate processing of the information will eliminate any need for it to be entered by hand, making the process more efficient.
