Update:

The State Fire Marshal said the cause of the fire is still undetermined at this time.

"Because of the near total consumption of the structure, we are unable to isolate the exact area of origin or cause for the fire at this time," said Assistant State Fire Marshal Mackey Ayersman.

Investigators and police are conducting interviews with witnesses to see if a cause can be identified, according to the State Fire Marshal.

Original Story:

Ten families and 17 people are now homeless after a fire destroyed their 12-unit apartment building in Taylor County early Saturday morning.

It happened just after 6 a.m. on Thayer Road in Grafton.

The Grafton Volunteer Fire Department said crews from six fire departments worked for nearly four hours to get the fire under control.  Firefighters said the cause is unknown and has called the West Virginia State Fire Marshal in to investigate.  Building owner, Phil Newlon, said one of his tenants informed him a candle may have started the fire.

The building is a total loss and Newlon said the tenants lost everything. No one was injured in the fire.  The fire rekindled just after 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The American Red Cross is working with five of the families and is trying to get in touch with the other five families affected by the fire.  If you were affected, you can get in touch with the Clarksburg American Red Cross office at 304-624-7689.
