CHARLESTON, WV -

Debra Martin has been appointed to the post of deputy director for the West Virginia Small Business Development Center.

As deputy director, Martin handles the day-to-day operations of the lead center and manages the statewide network of business coaches who provide technical assistance to entrepreneurs and small business owners.

The WVSBDC is a coaching system that provides training and technical expertise to entrepreneurs. The statewide network of coaches helps connect the entrepreneur with the right resources to fit the business's needs and stage of development.

Before joining WVSBDC, Martin spent 15 years with the West Virginia Development Office's international division. In her position as international trade manager, Martin provided export assistance to existing West Virginia companies and led more than 30 trade missions to countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and South America.

She holds the Certified Global Business Professional credential.

A native of Quinnimont in Fayette County, Martin earned her bachelor's degree in international relations from West Virginia University.

She completed graduate work in international relations at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. She also studied French at the Université de Caen and European studies at the Universiteit van Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

The West Virginia SBDC, a division of the West Virginia Development Office, is funded in part through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration. The WVSBDC is an accredited member of the national SBDC network, which provides expert business coaching and consulting resulting in greater access to capital and increased job creation.
