TAYLOR COUNTY -

The Greater Clarksburg Kennel Club hosted a match "B" dog show to prepare young dogs and puppies for the show ring on Saturday.

"This show is a forerunner to a dog show. It's kind of training ground for puppies to come to and get practice to be in the ring and what they have to do and for owners to also get a little bit practice," explained Karen McBee, President of the Greater Clarksburg Kennel Club.

The dog show featured many different elements.

"We did conformation which is judging the dogs the way they are put together, we followed that with getting the rally the ring set up for rally obedience, and then we're going to have regular obedience classes," said McBee.

Dogs of all shapes, sizes, and breeds entered the ring to show their obedience skills.

Steve Blackburn and his dog Allie competed in rally and advanced obedience.

Blackburn said he started showing dogs after seeing it done overseas.

"I was stationed in the Air Force in Germany during Desert Storm in 1990 and saw an exhibition of Malinois and German Shepherds and I was hooked," said Blackburn.

Blackburn said he enjoys meeting people who compete in and enjoy the same sport he does.

"I like all the people I meet and how everybody has worked with their dogs and some of the dogs that come to the events and how they are rescue dogs. Anybody can participate, you don't have to have a dog that is AKC registered, it's open to everybody," he explained.

McBee agrees that she enjoys the camaraderie with the other competitors.

"I'm a competitive person, so I like that competition and the feel of winning and getting those ribbons. I like to be able to mentor people and encourage them to go on and to do these things. It's really good to see them out and you develop a lot of camaraderie and friendship with these people," said McBee.

The show also featured a costume parade and a canine good citizen test.
