While the country will celebrate Veterans' Day next Monday, Lewis County will try and go one better.

The Lewis County Commission has declared next week to be Veterans' Appreciation Week in the county.

Commissioners say the proclamation is a way for them to specifically thank local veterans in the area.

They said it's the least they can do to support the veterans and military in their work.

"What a most honored thing to do. These guys and women have put their life on the line for us to give us our freedoms that we have here in the state and the nation, and so we're more than happy to show an appreciation week towards our veterans," said Commission President Pat Boyle.

Boyle said events for the week will include a Veteran's Day parade and dinner at the Jane Lew post of the American Legion.

It's a cause that will be close to home for many county residents. Like the rest of the state, a large number of Lewis Countians are veterans themselves.

Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau say that almost ten percent of people in the county are veterans, a percentage that very closely matches the rest of the state.
