United Hospital Center Hosts Diabetes and Kidney Health Fair

Posted: Updated:

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, and United Hospital Center is doing its part to lead area residents to a healthier lifestyle.

The hospital held a "Diabetes and Kidney Health Fair" on Tuesday afternoon and offered free health screening services to those who attended. Services included a BMI measurement, a blood pressure check, free educational materials, and the opportunity to speak with experts in the healthcare profession.

Hospital officials said planning healthy meals can change a person's life, especially if they experience the warning signs of diabetes.

"[If you experience] increased thirst, fatigue, being overweight, getting up at night, going to the bathroom, urinating multiple times, have diabetes in your family history, you need to get to education as soon as possible," said Mary Frances Vetri, the diabetes education coordinator at UHC.

Some tips for how to make healthy food choices include eating:

  • Lots of non-starchy vegetables and fruits
  • Whole-grain foods
  • Fish two to three times a week
  • Lean cuts of beef and pork

Other preventative measures include keeping track of what you eat; checking food labels for calorie, carbohydrate, total fat, and sodium amounts; and match how much you eat with your activity level.
