Alderson Broaddus University isn't the only area college starting a marching band.

West Virginia Wesleyan College has announced it will form a marching band by next fall.

Wesleyan hasn't had a marching band since the 1970's, despite a strong music program.

College staff said restarting the band is a good opportunity for both their students and the school.

"Obviously we have a strong music program, there's a potential pool there, but the opportunity to go out and recruit and enroll students who have an interest in participating in this I think is the greatest opportunity, and that's one of the reasons why we wanted to move forward with this opportunity," said Bernie Valento, vice president of enrollment management at Wesleyan.

Valento said many students with an interest in music are also good students.

Wesleyan's old marching band had a 57-year history on campus from 1922 to 1979.

The new band will be a co-curricular offering on campus, so music majors and non-music majors alike will be able to participate.

The college is already working to hire an Athletic Marching Band Director, and is recruiting for the band. They expect to bring in about 35 freshmen for the band next fall.
