UHC Hosts 'Celebration of Life' at Bridgeport Conference Center

Posted: Updated:

On Sunday afternoon, United Hospital Center joined some of its cancer survivors for a "Celebration of Life" brunch.

The annual event, which began in 1999, allowed those who have battled the disease to reunite with some of their doctors and other cancer survivors.

"Today is our 20th Celebration of Life. It's a day to celebrate cancer survivorship, so we invite our patients that received their diagnosis and/or treatment at UHC to just come out and spend a day to relax, laugh a little bit, share their stories with other cancer survivors," said Linda Carte, director of cancer services at UHC.

This year's theme was "You are not alone," a message that resonates with those who attended.

"It lets everybody know that we're all there and we're everywhere, our neighbors and our friends and our family. Everyone you see, everyone has a story, and it's about all of us," said Debbie Thompson, a cancer survivor.

"There are people in the room who were diagnosed a couple months ago, there are people in the room who were diagnosed decades ago, so they can draw strength from one another, as well as strength from knowing the research is ongoing," said Carte.

Also at the event: Dr. Yi Charlie Chen, who is currently studying the disease at Alderson Broaddus University. Chen was recently awarded a $100,000 from the Division of Science Research and West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission.
