On Monday night, Harrison County Commission brought in a very special guest to help it honor more than 300 veterans.

Retired General Barry McCaffrey served as the keynote speaker at the county's annual veterans appreciation dinner at the Bridgeport Conference Center.

Upon his retirement from active duty, McCaffrey was the most highly decorated four-star general in the U.S. Army, having received the Distinguished Service Cross, two Silver Stars, and three Purple Heart medals.

But the night, McCaffrey said, was all about those local heroes willing to give the ultimate sacrifice.

"To be honest, I've always loved West Virginia. It has a tremendous contribution to the armed forces...just incredible. What wonderful men and women. We had one young woman who enlisted in 1941, so it's very inspirational," said McCaffrey.

"I was married. But I just knew I had to do something to earn my keep, so to speak." said Leatrice Stout, who was one of the first women to serve in the Women's Army Corps in World War II.

West Virginia Speaker of the House Tim Miley also addressed veterans at the event, thanking them on behalf of the state.

McCaffrey now serves as a national security and terrorism analyst for NBC News.
