West Virginia University's partnership with Northeast Natural Energy LLC, a private, Charleston-based oil and gas company, to create projects between business and academia that will encourage innovation and competitiveness, recently was featured at a national conference.

The partnership came from WVU's participation in the Business-Higher Education Forum, which is the nation's oldest organization of senior business and higher education executives dedicated to advancing innovative solutions to U.S. education and workforce challenges, as well as issues related to global competitiveness.

Provost Michele Wheatly said the partnership is a prime example of the ways WVU is fulfilling its mission of teaching, research and science.

Northeast Natural Energy President Mike John said the company is excited to work with WVU and to improve the state's workforce as well as to engage in research to improve natural gas industry technology.

Wheatly and John spoke about their partnership during a Nov. 11 panel on "Partnerships for Sustaining Today's and Tomorrow's Energy Workforce" at the Association of Public and Land-grant University's national meeting in Washington, D.C.
