Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital Holds COPD Awareness Program in Lewis County

Posted: Updated:

Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital held a COPD Awareness program at the Lewis County Senior Center Tuesday.

The program highlights ways to treat COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

COPD includes conditions like asthma and emphysema, and hospital staff said it's the cause of more deaths in women than breast cancer and diabetes combined.

They said it's a particular concern in this area, too.

"If you've even smoked a hundred cigarettes in your lifetime, you're at risk for COPD. And just like any disease, if you catch it early, it can be prevented, and almost curable," said Kristi Gannon, of Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital.
