With the holiday season approaching, comes increased activity for people to fall victim to scams and theft.

Police said if you're expecting packages delivered to your home, you shouldn't leave them unattended if you're gone for a long time. You should change the mode of delivery or have someone you trust secure your package.

Also, check your accounts regularly and never give out personal information until you've verified it's valid.

"Scams come in a host of forms. People calling your house, people emailing you certainly, even people showing up reporting to be a salesman of this or that," said Chief Matt Gregory, of the Buckhannon Police Department.

Another tip, don't leave large boxes on your porch or in front of your house. It can act as advertising to a potential thief that you've bought something new.
