Expanded Federal Express service tops a list of current good news at Tri-State Airport, according to Airport Director Jerry Brienza.

Brienza said the FedEx facility in Huntington has recently doubled its capacity as the company is transferring its Charleston postal freight to its facility at Tri-State Airport. As a result, FedEx has added a second Boeing 757 daily flight in and out of Tri-State.

According to Brienza, Tri-State Airport is home to the only FedEx Express ramp-sort facility in the state of West Virginia and is the only company in the state that can handle "heavy" air freight, over 1200 lbs.

The airport director said the two daily B-757 flights will benefit HTS through fuel sales, as "the company has been good about purchasing some fuel in Huntington, as well as Memphis. Hopefully, the more FedEx does in Huntington, the more it will see what we have to offer and might consider another expansion here."

Meanwhile, Marketing Director Beckie McKinley, writing in the airport's current newsletter, reports that larger Allegiant aircraft will soon be arriving at Tri-State Airport and USA Airways has added a fourth flight to Charlotte to itsSunday schedule.

Passengers will soon be experiencing "more comfortable, quieter, and larger aircraft" on their non-stop flights to and from Orlando/Daytona Beach and Tampa Bay/St. Petersburg Florida. McKinley said. "Allegiant is replacing the current MD-80 aircraft with 177-seat Airbus A320 jets on its Huntington/Florida routes within the next couple of weeks. The Airbus seats will be more comfortable for passengers because they are about an inch wider, and a larger cabin allows for six seats per row instead of the MD-80s' five."

McKinley said US Air's addition of a fourth flight to its Sunday schedule should be "welcomed by both business travelers and leisure passengers alike." The flight departs at 5:57 p.m. from Huntington to Charlotte, and arrives back at HTS at 9:27 p.m. "The additional flight will allow business travelers to get a jump-start on their travel itinerary and be at their destination ready to go for Monday morning business. The flight will also benefit travelers who want to maximize their weekend time away from home, by returning later in the evening."
