First Baptist Church in Shinnston Prepares Over 200 Meals for the Community

SHINNSTON -

Volunteers at the First Baptist Church in Shinnston worked all Thursday morning to prepare over 200 Thanksgiving meals for the community.

Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and more. A full Thanksgiving meal was available to anyone who needed one Thursday.

"It's open to the community in Shinnston, the surrounding areas, the Lincoln feeder area who we try to serve, they are more than welcome to come here and eat with us, pick it up, or we deliver," said Kevin Nuzum, the pastor of the First Baptist Church.

A majority of the 230 meals made on Thursday were either being picked up or delivered.

Nuzum said the people who receive the meals come from different walks of life.

"One of the things we try to stress is that it's not just for people who may be ‘hungry' but they may be widowed, or lonely, or just the two of them and it's a lot of work to do a Thanksgiving dinner. I know a lot of families take it out of the containers and put in on plates and put it on the table so they can do it that way we just want people to celebrate Thanksgiving and make it as comfortable as possible," Nuzum said.

Andrew Kisamore organized the dinner. He said he brought his daughter so she could learn the importance of volunteering.

"This year I brought my daughter who is five and introduce her to helping people out during the holidays. It's just a small thing you can do to reconnect with the community and with your family to show them how important it is," said Kisamore.

Nuzum said the number of dinners the church prepared this year was the highest it's ever done for Thanksgiving.

"Every year we've seen an increase in the numbers. With the economy and the situations people find themselves in because of lack of work we're just glad that we're able to do this," Nuzum said.

Christmas dinner is next for the First Baptist Church.

Nuzum said donations are always needed and accepted.
