MORGANTOWN -

The Roller Vixens are the only roller derby team in North Central West Virginia and a WVU club sport like any other. The team is made up of sixty percent WVU students, faculty and staff and community members.

There is other criteria to be a club sport at WVU other than just having a team.

"We're a WVU student organization which means on top of roller derby we do charity. And so far the past few years we've been the top donating student org," said Jessica Hall, the Vice President of the Roller Vixens student organization. "So, we're trying to keep that up. Our president just took a whole bunch of cans to the food drive."

Roller derby is a unique sport in that it doesn't use a ball. There are four Blockers and one Jammer, who is identified by star on the helmet, on each team. The Jammers score points by passing members of the other team on the track.

Each team member also creates an alter ego. Including, 'Rita Repulsa,' 'Bacon,' 'Peptide Blonde,' 'Darth Vixen.'

New members come in as 'fresh meat' and have to go through training for up to a year to be able to compete with the team.

"WFTDA, the Women's Flat Track Derby Association, has a set of skills you have to be able to pass. You have to do 27 laps in five minutes, you have to be able to jump over obstacles of a certain height, you have to be able to perform a bunch of stops and hits and falls," said Hall. "Just basically making sure you're safe to get in there and start hitting people because if you don't know what you're doing, you're going to get hurt."

The sport is not tame. Members say people often leave practices or exhibitions with injuries.

If you want to see the Roller Vixens in action the team will hold the annual Jingle Brawl at Mylan Park Dec. 21 starting at 5 p.m.
