The West Virginia State Police arrested 44 people for DUI over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Sgt. Michael Baylous with the state police said between Nov. 27 and Dec. 1 police responded to two fatal vehicle accidents, seven alcohol-related collisions, 93 crashes and issued 1,198 speeding citations, 245 seat belt citations, 13 child restraint citations and assisted 500 total motorists.

Baylous said the amount of DUI arrests and alcohol-related crashes is unacceptable.

"The reported activity for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend is somewhat disheartening," he said. "When considering the total number of DUI arrests and alcohol related collisions, it is clear that some people are either not getting the message or completely apathetic about highway safety."

Baylous said the people causing accidents are not only putting their own lives at risk but countless others are being put in harms way by their actions.

There are no legitimate excuses for such behavior, he added.
