Small Business Administration To Hold Workshops For Seniors

Posted: Updated:

The Small Business Administration is encouraging area seniors to open up shop.

The organization will host two workshops next week at the Lewis County Senior Citizens Center.

One will highlight the new Affordable Care Act web site, the other will offer seniors a glance at how to start their own businesses.

Officials said that's something more seniors are taking the opportunity to do.

"A lot of times they've taken hobbies and turned them into successful business, so there's a whole range of reasons why they want to, and it's part of the American dream," said Larry Batten, an economist with the SBA.

Both workshops will be held Tuesday, December 10th.  The small business workshop is at 10 a.m. with the healthcare workshop at noon.

The government organization is also helping those who have already opened shop to expand their businesses online.

Nikki Bowmar of the SBA said setting up your small business on the internet is basically the same as starting a regular business, but entrepreneurs do need to take certain precautions.

"Setting up your small business on the internet can be a lucrative way to attract more customers, expand demographics, and increase sales. However, doing business online comes with additional legal and financial considerations, particularly in the area of privacy, security, copyrighting, and taxation," said Bowmar.
