Pierpont Community and Technical College's Veterinary Technology Program Nationally Recognized

Posted: Updated:

Pierpont Community and Technical College's Veterinary Technology program has been recognized as a "Top Ten Large Animal Vet Tech School and Farm Animal Programs."

Pierpont's two-year associate degree program prepares students to be Veterinary Technicians.

The United States Labor Department, Bureau of Labor Statistics has ranked Veterinary Technicians and Technologists as one of the fastest growing employment opportunities in the United States.

Pierpont officials said the demand for veterinary technician professionals greatly exceeds the supply and being nationally recognized is quite an honor.

"I have a lot of contacts in the area and if it wasn't for all the local people in the area letting us come and utilize their facilities and allowing our students to perform procedures on their animals, we wouldn't be in the top ten," said Shery Grudi, Pierpont Community and Technical College.

Grudi said the curriculum is very hands on and that's what makes it unique. Students work with animals from the Marion County Humane Society and even take field trips to local farms.

The students learn by actually working with animals.

Pierpont said more than 100 people apply to be in the Vet Tech program each year and it only accepts 25 of them.
