Robert Hilliard Reacts to Being Named Clarksburg Chief of Police

CLARKSBURG -

Back in July Clarksburg Chief of Police Marshall Goff abruptly resigned.

City Manager Martin Howe then named Robert Hilliard the interim chief.

On Wednesday Hilliard was officially named the new chief of police in Clarksburg.

Hilliard said he is almost at a loss for words.

"It's an overwhelming experience, I thought it was an overwhelming experience when I was appointed as interim for five months but when I was actually named by City Manager Martin Howe it was something I just can't describe," Hilliard said.

More than 20 people applied for the position of chief and went through testing for it.

Hilliard said he hopes to accomplish a few things as chief.

"It was an experience in those five months. I believe I learned a lot and had a lot of support from council and also other law enforcement agencies. I want officers interacting with the community so that the community knows the officers on a name basis instead of not knowing who they are," said Hilliard.

Hilliard was the interim chief for five months before the decision was made.
