Marion County Board of Education Approves Purchase Of Old 'National Guard Armory'

Posted: Updated:

The Marion County Board of Education held a special meeting Friday afternoon.

Superintendent Gary Price said he is very proud to formerly announce the board has approved the purchase of the old National Guard Armory on Mary Lou Retton Drive.

The Hershel "Woody" Williams National Guard Armory was moved to a new location in East Fairmont.

Price said this is something the Board has been planning to do for several years.

Marion County Schools used to pay rent to use the current facility for Fairmont Senior basketball games and other community activities.

Price said there are plans to renovate the building, which cost the board $300,000.

"We certainly look forward to having complete ownership of that property," Price said. "It has some additional classroom and office space that we intend to take full advantage of and it is going to be a very flexible worthwhile piece of equipment for us."

Price said the Board of Education is now waiting for the purchase to be finalized and approved by the Board of Public Works and the Secretary of State's office.
