    The Education Alliance has scheduled the first in a series of discussions about strengthening public education.

The West Virginia Department of Education and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards announced that 53 teachers in West Virginia achieved National Board Certification this year, demonstrating that they have attained the knowledge and skills necessary to prepare students for success in college and career.

For 2013, West Virginia ranks 20th in the number of teachers who certified this year. The total number of National Board Certified Teachers in the state is 749, making it 25th in the nation.

Berkeley County leads this year's list of newly certified teachers with 16 new NBCTs this year, bringing their total to 60, passing Cabell County for second place for counties with the most NBCTs. Wood County certified four teachers this year and keeps the top spot in the state in total number of NBCTs per county with 86. The top five counties are: Wood, 86; Berkeley, 60; Cabell, 59; Monongalia, 52; and Putnam, 36.

West Virginia's 53 teachers receiving national certification in 2013 are:
