Volunteer Fire Department Voice Concerns About Affordable Care Act, Workers Compensation

FAIRMONT -

Congressman David McKinley held a roundtable discussion in Marion County on Wednesday to discuss the Affordable Care Act and how Workers Compensation could affect Volunteer Fire Departments.

Representative McKinley is co-sponsoring a bill that would exempt VFD's under Obamacare.

Fire Chiefs from across the state attended the meeting to voice their concerns and opinions.

"This could impact 30 volunteer fire departments across the state. Of the 30, we contacted about 12 of them. All 12 of them said they have no way of coming up with an additional one thousand dollars per month to provide insurance for their people," said Thomas Miller, Sissonville Volunteer Fire Department.

Fire Departments said if there isn't a solution put in place in the upcoming legislative session, the issue could force many of the state's fire departments to shut their doors.
