Woman Dead After Fairchance Road Fire in Monongalia County

A woman is dead after a fire on Fairchance Road in Monongalia County just before 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Monongalia County Sheriff's Lt. R.A. Gidley said firefighters found the house to be fully involved upon arrival. An elderly woman couldn't get out of the residence and was pronounced dead at the scene. An elderly man was able to escape the flames with only minor injuries.

The West Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office identified the woman as Katherine Ann Clere, 76. 

The West Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office said Thursday that the fire appeared to be accidental.

The Cheat Lake Fire Department, Star City Volunteer Fire Department, Granville Volunteer Fire Department, Brookhaven Volunteer Fire Department, Clinton-District Volunteer Fire Department, and Monongalia County EMS each responded to the scene. The Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department also responded from Pennsylvania.
