The American Water Charitable Foundation is closing out the year with a big gift to Tri-State Fire Academy.

The foundation provided the Huntington-based school with a $4,000 community safety grant, which will be used to buy safety training equipment.

"Firefighting and public water service have been inextricably linked for more than a century, and we are proud to help further the critical training services provided by the Tri-State Fire Academy," West Virginia American Water President Jeff McIntyre said in a news release. "We want to recognize their valuable work through this grant and assist them in providing the equipment that they need to ultimately enhance the overall safety of our community."

The grant money will be used to purchase hazardous material gear and confined space equipment, as well as four gas monitors and pieces for hazardous atmosphere detection.

The American Water Charitable Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. West Virginia American Water is a subsidiary of American Water and is the largest water utility in West Virginia, providing services to about 550,000 people.
