City of Clarksburg Celebrates New Year's Eve In Jackson Square

With another year drawing to a close, the city of Clarksburg hosted its second annual New Year's Eve celebration Tuesday night, an event that people from across the county like Sam Silva thought would be a great way to ring in the new year.

"I figured that instead of just sitting at home, not doing anything, the city's having a celebrations, why don't you go out and celebrate a little bit?" said Silva.

And that's exactly what many people decided to do. Only a few minutes into the evening, more than a hundred people were out in Jackson Square enjoying the live music and company of friends, with more arriving throughout the night. And even if the weather didn't cooperate, the city was prepared to keep the crowds warm.

"I thought it was going to be a lot colder, and I was really really happy to see the twenty or so outdoor heaters which was great," Silva said.

Clarksburg Mayor Cathy Goings said planning an event like this takes most of the year it ushers out the door. But it also has turned out to be a good way to bring the city together and Goings says there's still plenty of room to grow.

"It's just a way to create camaraderie, and not only do we want to draw people from Harrison County, but we hope to draw from surrounding counties, and ultimately maybe we'll be a statewide event," said Goings.

The event wrapped up with a fireworks display from the top of Lowndes Hill visible from the square in downtown Clarksburg.
