Davis Health System Names Elkins Campus As Davis Medical Center

ELKINS -

Davis Health System's Elkins campus has a new name.

It held an announcement Thursday to mark the change.

The new name shows that each division is part of the greater healthcare team.

"We're more than hospital, and I think it sets the tone for our employees for the community as we go forward. We got a lot of things going on for this coming year, we got a new medical building opening," said Mark Doak, president and CEO of Davis Health System.

Davis Memorial Hospital was founded in 1902 by Henry Gassaway Davis. The hospital has grown into much more than a hospital. It has transformed into a full service network of health care services.

The new name more accurately reflects an expanding scope of services and commitment of providing advanced medical care for this region.

Davis Medical Center will be made up of the hospital, the new 73,000 square foot addition, and several other facilities. Doak said the new name honors Davis, and continues meeting changes in health care services.

"You don't want to lose that tradition, but you also have to realize that a lot of health care is just not provided in a hospital. The majority of the services we provide are actually outpatient services. So we needed to transition to something that was reflective of what we actually do," Doak said.

"I've been pleased that the board has been onboard with this, always looking towards the future, what health care will become and what the community will need in trying to match up in what health care in this region will be able to offer so we can take care of the patients in our community," said Steven Toney, board of director member.

Some divisions within Davis Medical Center are already beginning to use the new name, a full transition will happen later. The new addition is scheduled to be finished in May.
