The ex-husband of a slain Preston County woman has been indicted by a Harrison County grand jury for failing to allow the couple's daughter to visit her grandparents.
Shannon Stafford, 29, was gunned down by her ex-father in law, Larry Mitchell, 54, of Shinnston, in a Wal-Mart parking lot in April 2012, according to Morgantown Police. Larry Mitchell is the father of Stafford's estranged husband, Nathan Mitchell, according to Morgantown Police Chief Ed Preston.
Stafford and her soon to be ex-husband had arranged to meet at the Wal-Mart to switch custody of their daughter Faith, said police. Larry Mitchell confronted Stafford at her car, then shot her. She tried to escape but fell down, and Mitchell continued to shoot her, according to authorities. Larry Mitchell pleaded guilty to first degree murder in Dec. 2012. Mitchell's guilty plea carries a maximum term of life in prison. Nathan Mitchell was awarded full custody of the couple's daughter.
Nathan Edward Mitchell was indicted in the Jan. 2014 term of the Harrison County grand jury on four counts of concealment or removal of a minor child from a custodian or from a person entitled to visitation. Nathan Mitchell violated a court order granting grandparent visitation with the intent to deprive his daughter from seeing Stafford's foster grandparents, according to court documents. The incidents occurred in April and May 2013.
Shannon's story was featured in a recent episode of "Evil In-Law" on Investigation Discovery.
