Marion County Disability Action Center Kicks Off New Project

FAIRMONT -

The Disability Action Center in Marion County kicked off its 'Emergency Preparedness for People with Disabilities' project on Tuesday.

Organizers said a $2,500 grant from the Dominion Foundation helped to fund the project.

The center has partnered with the Marion County 911 Center and WVU Center for Excellence in Disabilities to educate residents and provide resources they would need in an emergency.

Tuesday's event included a tour of the Marion County 911 Center, an informational presentation, lunch, and the announcement of the grant.

Organizers said with all of the emergency situations that have happened over the past couple of years and all those that will continue to happen, everyone needs to be prepared and educated.

One way to do that is to have an emergency kit.

"No folks with disabilities have these. They can't afford to make their kits. A lot of the folks that we work with receive social security and are low income. They cant afford to set aside their water, their flashlights in case of an emergency. So we are going to do it for them," said Julie Sole, Marion County Disability Action Center.

Each person who attended the kick off event received an emergency kit that they'll fill as meetings continue.
