'Astronomy Day' Celebrated in Clarksburg

Posted: Updated:

Saturday was Astronomy Day at Fairmont State University's Gaston Caperton Center in Clarksburg.

Experts and speakers were on hand to discuss a variety of topics, from comets to the exploration of Mars.

The Central Appalachian Astronomy Club sponsors the event every year, the weekend before Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Officials said they like reaching out to help educate the public about our universe.

"Tell them about telescopes, tell them about astronomy, and help with the learning experience," said Jim King of the Central Appalachian Astronomy Club.

"I wanted to give a presentation to people so they can have a better understanding what to expect if this were to ever happen again," said Mark Kochte.

Kochte is the operation specialist for the Messenger Mission, which is currently orbiting the planet of Mercury.
