FAIRMONT -

Fairmont City Council has been working on its application to join the state's "home rule" pilot program for quite some time.

Four West Virginia cities, including Bridgeport, participated in the initial five-year phase.

Home Rule would allow Fairmont to make decisions more efficiently without consulting the state.

The legislature has passed an extension of the program, but with several restrictions.

Fairmont City Manager Jay Rogers said council is take a specific approach in the application process.

"We are really kind of putting an application together that we believe will address our business community," Rogers said. "Doing some additional things that support business growth and development in Fairmont. Also taking a look at some of our problems like blighted buildings and dilapidated structures."

The application deadline is June 1.
