Buckhannon Polar Plunge Brings Funds To School

BUCKHANNON -

It may have been the perfect time for the polar plunge sponsored by Buckhannon Academy Elementary School on Saturday.

The school organized the event to help raise money to be put towards two new playgrounds, something they said is very much needed. But staff and parents at the school said a simple sale wasn't going to cut it for this fundraiser.

"Our PTO likes to do things that are community-oriented instead of sending our kids out to peddle merchandise or whatever, and we thought it was something that nobody else has done, we were trying to get people excited, so why not?" said organizer Krista Sappey.

And so dozens of brave souls took to the hole in the frozen Buckhannon River to help make that project a reality. While some came with plenty of layers, others came with very few. But whatever their dress, school principal Sabrina Skidmore said she knows they'll make a dent in the cash they need to raise.

"We have several individual teachers and staff members who had over a $1,000 themselves in sponsors, so we hope it did really well," said Skidmore.

While both Skidmore and Sappey don't expect to raise all the money they need with this event, they said that's only one of their goals. They also want to be sure people know about the school's need.

"We were judging the success of this by just getting people involved and just getting the word out that we need a new playground, so by the turnout I would say that we're successful no matter what we raise," Sappey said.
