The Tenth Annual Veneer Tech Craftsmans Challenge is now accepting entries, and Veneer Technologies Incorporated announces the 2014 panel that will decide this international woodwork design competition highlighting achievement in the use of natural wood veneer product. The judges are Tim Fixmer, publisher, CCI Media; Wave Oglesby, vice president sales and marketing, Columbia Forest Products; and Alfred Sharp, studio furniture maker.
The Veneer Tech Craftsmans Challenge rewards excellence in the use of veneer and wood products through cash awards and other recognition for the entire supply chain including craftsmen, distributors and distributor sales representatives, and also student designers. Entries are accepted through June 1, 2014. Competition categories include Architectural Woodworking, Cabinetry, Furniture, Specialty Products, Store Fixtures, and Student Design.
Tim Fixmer returns to the panel as an industry media representative, publisher of competition co-sponsor CabinetMaker+FDM, and a member of the Woodwork Career Alliance Education Committee. Reflecting on past years Veneer Tech Craftsmans Challenges, Fixmer comments, The quality of entries is superb. We observe stellar achievements in design, craftsmanship and technique.
Wave Oglesby is a thirty-year veteran with Columbia Forest Products, a leading panel and forest products supplier now headquartered in Greensboro, NC, beginning as field sales representative and working up to director of plywood sales and now vice president of sales and marketing. He holds a B.S. in Wood Technology from Appalachian State University, and completed the Executive MBA program at the University of Virginias Darden Business School.
The work of Alfred Sharp of Woodbury, Tennessee, has been featured in Colonial Homes, Antiques, Fine Woodworking, Woodwork, Woodshop News and Custom Woodworking magazines, as well as several books chronicling the studio furniture movement. He is a master of high and low relief carving, inlay, marquetry and French polishing, and a past recipient of the Cartouche Award from the Society of American Period Furniture Makers. Sharp also is past president of The Furniture Society.
Entry materials for the Veneer Tech Craftsmans Challenge are available online through http://www.veneertech.com and from Veneer Technologies sales representatives and distributors. There is no entry fee. Material does not need have been sourced through Veneer Tech to be eligible.
A cash award of $3000 will be made to the creator of the grand prize winning entry. The distributor of the veneer used in the grand prize winning entry will receive $2000, and the corresponding distributor salesperson will receive $1000. Other category winners receive $1000 each. There is also an additional $1000 award to the grand prizewinner for early entry by March 31, 2014. Awards will be announced at IWF Atlanta, August 20-23, 2014.
