MORGANTOWN -

Temperatures may have been in the lower twenties, but that didn't stop people from coming out to Cooper's Rock.

In fact, it encouraged them to get outdoors for the third annual Cooper's Rock Foundation Winter Fest. Hundreds of participants took part in a number of activities. Some were competitive but all were fun.

Activities ranged from paintball biathlons to skiing to snowball throwing contests, as well as some hot chocolate drinking, to stay warm.

Among the more popular activities were sledding and obstacle courses. Cross country skiing and more advanced snow games were also available. The Cooper's Rock Foundation hoped the day would educate people on winter recreation, all for a cause.

"Wonderful. We've had about three or four hundred people up here today enjoying winter and all of our events," said Gwen Jones, President of Cooper's Rock Foundation. "People are enjoying some chili and cookies, and it's for a fundraiser to raise money for the forest. We're trying to build a new restroom here on this parking lot."

Jones said the event catches the attention of more and more people every year. Despite several large snowfalls in recent weeks, residents still look for things to do outdoors.

People young and old looking for a weekend winter activity found exactly what they were looking for on the hills of Coopers Rock.

Other activities included a frying pan tossing contest, a slalom time trial and a snowman building area.

"So, I think people just get tired of being inside, and want to come outside, and this is West Virginia, wild and wonderful, so we have people who want to be outside and celebrate the outdoors. Lots of families with little children who want to come out and sled ride, so it's a great time to do this," said Jones.
