College Spotlight: Fairmont State's Woodman Signs 28 on NSD

FAIRMONT -

Finishing with an overall record of 3-7 one year ago was a tough pill to swallow for Jason Woodman. But it's funny how one recruiting class can change the optimism from minimal, to maximum.

"Overall, we're extremely happy," Woodman admitted. "We've talked on long terms about our program and if we can string two of three good classes together like we had this year, then our future is going to be very bright."

Bright futures are powered by putting pen to paper. Fairmont State signed 28 kids on National Signing Day, including Kennedy Award Winner Chazzy Thomas.

"It's nice," Thomas said. "The fact that all of my family, well most of my family will be coming to visit for the games, it's just real nice."

"I think he's going to bring depth, obviously, to the position," Woodman said. "But I think he's going to bring a little bit of freshness to the position. Him and the other three backs that we signed are going to be young, freshmen kids coming out of high school. So we hope to have some energy there and a little bit of excitement at the position."

Excitement is what Chazzy brings to the table. Not to mention, former Martinsburg quarterback and Kennedy Award runner-up Malique Watkins. Oh yeah, Woodman signed him on Wednesday as well.

"We felt very strongly about finding kids who we can get the ball to in space and they can make a couple guys miss, and have the ability to take it to the house every time they touch it. Him and Zach Pate both are in-state kids that we think can bring that to the table immediately," Woodman added.

Eight of Woodman's 28 signees hail from right here in the mountain state. He says he will continue to build his Fairmont team around in-state talent for years to come.

"We thought the talent in the state this year was a little bit extraordinary," Woodman said. "There were a lot of good athletes and a lot of kids who we felt would be very good college players at the next level. So we love recruiting West Virginia kids anyways, especially with the caliber of talent that was in the state this year. We knew we had to get them and we went really hard after them and luckily we were fortunate enough to get a good bit of them."
