Restaurant Road Trip: The Grind WV

MORGANTOWN -

Everyone deserves a good cup of coffee every morning, and a Morgantown cafe has remained one of the most popular downtown stops for almost 20 years.

This week the Restaurant Road Trip stops at the Grind WV.

Coffee before 10 a.m. for many is man's best friend.

"What a chance to do something right for people, and do it all the time," said The Grind's owner Rich Johnson. "That's how I fell in love with coffee, and coffee service. It's that ability to make someone's day and do it everyday."

New owner Rich Johnson certainly has the passion for coffee. A Seattle native, he purchased Jay's Daily Grind and is trying to build on the cafe's legacy.

"Whether it was drip coffee or a late, it was going to look beautiful, and taste beautiful and it was going to be crafted like you were in Brooklyn or San Francisco," he said.

One of Johnson's expansions is making the Grind about more than coffee, focusing more on a  simple breakfast and an artisan lunch menu that consists of different soups and sandwiches.

"They're great because they're fresh Italian rolls from Cellone's up in Pittsburgh," he said. "We slice everything every day. We don't slice things for two days, or leave anything in the fridge. We do things to keep it fresh."

"I haven't had their breakfast before, but I hear it's good," said I've only had the lunch and it's been good for me," said customer Nikki Estep.

Sitting right up against the University the Grind is a popular stop, but it's far from a student hangout. Johnson said about 50 percent of his customers are WVU employees and many who work downtown are drawn to the Grind every morning.

"I'm here probably two, three times a week," said customer Jack Lake. "It's one of my favorite place to get coffee. They've got a lot of different things you can't get around town and it's got that local feel as well as one of the best chicken salad sandwiches that I've ever had. It's just a great environment and it's very convenient."
