The snowy conditions didn't stop people from coming out to Morris Park in Marion County for a good old fashioned frozen competition.

"The motto is, 'No wimps, no whiners.' And for no reason can an Ice Bowl ever be canceled. You just come out and do it," said organizer Rebecca Burton.

That's exactly why Burton and dozens of other participants braved the cold on Saturday: to play some disc golf as part of the 10th annual Fairmont Ice Bowl.

"A team of total volunteers that are devoted to creating this event and working on this disc golf course," said Burton.

The event is held in memory of Burton's son, Seth, who died in a car accident in 1998.

"After Seth passed away, we had a goal of creating a teen center in town, and that was just not going to be. So, a friend of ours, Jason Stalnaker, said, 'You know, I have a dream of having a disc golf course, and I think Morris Park would be a wonderful place. So it's been very miraculous in how this gas come together," said Burton.

For Fairmont nonprofit the Soup Opera, it's a miracle for those who rely on it, too. Organizers of the event set a goal to raise $2,000 for the soup kitchen.

"This past year, we served over 40,000 meals, so what Rebecca and Phil do to raise money for us is just a tremendous help," said Shelia Tennant of the Soup Opera.

"Traditionally, food pantries and soup kitchens have a difficult time this time of year because people give to them at Christmas, and this is more of a lean time," said Burton.

Organizers also handed out awards at the event to the top three finishers for the Singles, Doubles, and Overall Performance.
