Harsh Winter Has Caused City of Clarksburg to Go Over Salt Budget

Posted: Updated:

With this rough winter we've had there has been a large amount of salt used to treat the roads, so much so that the city of Clarksburg has gone over budget with the purchase of salt.

The budget was for $50,000 and so far the city has spent almost $10,000 over that.

But city manager Martin Howe said it evens out with previous winter's we have had.

"It's an up and down depending on the weather year to year.  Obviously this year it has been more impactful and negative to the budget and overall our salt supplies has increased this year.  We anticipate that it will start trailing off a little bit so we can start saving those supplies for next year." Howe explained.

Howe said the city has a contract with a supplier. This means when they buy a certain amount the city receives a discounted rate. He said that this system has worked out well this year.
