Tucker County Boys Basketball Head Coach Tom Gutshall earned his 500th career victory on Tuesday night. The Mountain Lions knocked off Trinity en route to securing the milestone win for their coach.
Gutshall has spent his entire career as the head coach of the boys basketball program at Tucker County High School. His allegiance to a single high school is rare during this day in age, but has become a part of Coach Gutshall's life.
Tucker County is ranked fourth in the latest Class 'A' West Virginia Boys Basketball Associated Press State Rankings, which has the Mountain Lions in familiar territory.
The boys basketball program at Tucker County High School has been excellent under Gutshall's watch. A visit to the State Tournament in Charleston has become a normal yearly occurrence for his program.
Tuesday's victory transformed from a postgame handshake between teams, to a celebration of sorts, as the home crowd rose to their feet, applauding a man who has meant so much to Tucker County boys basketball.
"Like I said, I've had a great program. It's really unheard of for a Class 'A' basketball team to be this good for that long, and that's a tribute to the kids. It doesn't have anything to do with me. I mean really. We've been to the state tournament 18-out-of-the-last -- I'm not going to get into that," Gutshall explained. "But I've had great kids to coach and that's the main thing."
Gutshall joins Tom Yester of Morgantown, Dave Rogers of Martinsburg, Allen Osborne of Poca and Mick Price of Ravenswood as the only active West Virginia Boys Basketball Head Coaches with 500-plus victories for their career.
