A grand jury started hearing testimony involving Derek Shifflett, 30.

Shifflett is facing several charges of sexual abuse by a parent, guardian, or custodian. Sexual assault in the first degree, and incest.

The jury heard testimony from the victim's friend who learned of the abuse from a message the victim, only known by the initials H.S., wrote on a tree at school.
