8th Annual Empty Bowls Luncheon Held at Mylan Park

Many people in our area suffer from hunger. Neighbors, friends, family, and even children. One local group hosts an event to try to combat the problem.

The eighth annual Empty Bowls Luncheon brought almost 2,000 people out to the Hazel Ruby McQuain Convention Center on Saturday.

There were more than 300 volunteers on site this year. That's not including the hundreds of volunteers who helped prepare the food, venue, and make the ceramic bowls given out each year at the event.

"We got lots of people donating the ceramic bowls," said Corey Farris, empty bowls luncheon board of directors. "You walk out of here with that ceramic bowl and it's a reminder through out the year, that many people will not have a full bowl, just as your bowl is at that moment, and they're lucky to fill it up and so there are plenty of other opportunities to help other people that are hungry."

Last year's luncheon donated $65,000 to 12 area food banks and six feeding problems. Farris said he hopes to donate even more after this year's event.
