WVU Hosts Energy and Sustainability Conference

Posted: Updated:

The EPA will have new regulations for existing power plants and their CO2 emissions later this year.

WVU held an Energy and Sustainability Conference aimed to look at those regulations.

The conference discussed the need for allowing states to have the maximum flexibility to achieve compliance for the laws.

Three panels discussed what's going to happen when these rules are in place. The last panel discussed community impact.

"I think West Virginia is going to be disproportionately hit hard as are some of the surrounding coal dependent states. The last panel is going to be looking at helping communities. What are the programs that are going to be available to help communities if we end up having to go through a transition as a result of these rules," said James Van Nostrand, of WVU.

The new EPA rules will be released in June of this year.
