Fairmont City Council Votes to Protect Victims of Harassment

Posted: Updated:

The city of Fairmont is taking a stand against harassment in its communities.

At city council on Tuesday night, members voted unanimously to pass an ordinance protecting residents from harassment in the form of phone calls, social media, or other electronic forms of communication, such as texting.

Victims of harassment can report it to local authorities, which gives the city the upper hand in monitoring these issues.

"You could actually have that person brought up on charges, and where the city could never collect the fees on this, now if that person is incarcerated or charged, then the city gets the fees," said Mayor Ron Straight.

The ordinance, which mirrors the state law, will take effect in 30 days.
