White Hall Takes Next Step In Sidewalk Project

WHITE HALL -

The town of White Hall is getting ready to begin taking bids for its sidewalk project.

Mayor Guy Ward said the town desperately needs sidewalks for many reasons, but the utmost important is safety.

The project originally had four phases but Mayor Guy Ward says it can finish only one of them, due to a lack of funding.

"The engineers looked at it and decided that we were going to have to put a retaining wall in during our second phase," Mayor Ward said in August. "This is going to increase the cost 200 or 300 thousand dollars probably. There's no way we can afford that ourselves and unfortunately we probably wont be able to get money."

The project's phase one is for a sidewalk to run from Mike's Electric on U.S. 250 ending at the State Farm office. Phase two will run from the White Hall Convenience Store to Mike's Electric. Phase three will run from Gateway Plaza to Emerald Lane by White Hall Elementary School. Phase four would go toward Walmart from State Farm.

"We'll put together a package. There will be a notice in the paper that will probably run for a couple of weeks," Mayor Ward said. "We'll probably take bids for up to a month of so after that."

Mayor Ward said bids will be going out within the next week and he would like to have the project started in the spring.
