TUCKER COUNTY -

A collaborative project to build a proposed public boulder park near Davis in Tucker County got a jump start Friday.

Several project partners and stakeholders were on hand Friday at Tucker County High School to kickoff a fundraising campaign to create an outdoor recreation venue and benefit the county's emergency medical services.

"A number of our employees work and live in this area, and we feel to give back to the communities where we one, we have our major assets in, and two where our employees work," said Robert Orndorff, Jr., Dominion managing director for West Virginia and State Local Affairs.

Dominion Foundation kicked off the campaign with a $25,000 donation. $10,000 will help establish a fund for the county's EMS, and $15,000 for the Boulder Park project. The public park will serve as the trail head for a new section of non-motorized trail that will connect Davis to a proposed Division of Highways Rail Trail Project.

Partners said the Boulder Park will create a pleasing welcome for those who live here, and for those that visit the mountains of Tucker County, an escape from the confines of city and suburban life.

"This is the gateway to the tourism for this Canaan Valley, and any type of attraction we could support to maintain the tourism and economic viability of this area that's why we here," Orndorff said.

"It will get their attention and bring them in, and coming by anyway. Local people have been climbing rocks since they could walk. So they'll be out there, it's not a big deal to them. The city folks coming up they'll really like it," said Davis Mayor Joe Drenning.

The use of the park will be free to the public. The site is close to the Corridor H exit and visible from Route 32. The total cost of the project is $500,000.

Students from Tucker County High School will be designing a website on the project.

Partners include Tucker Community Foundation, Town of Davis, Western Pocahontas, W.Va. Division of Highways, Heart of the Highlands, Dominion, First Energy, J.F. Allen, W.Va. Division of Natural Resources, Tucker County Planning Commission, Tucker County Development Authority, Tucker County Commission, Canaan Valley Institute, Tucker County Convention Visitors Bureau, Chamber of Commerce, Tucker County Trails, Tucker County High School and Board of Education.
