MONONGALIA COUNTY -

The Monongalia County Commission has declared a "Countywide State of Emergency for Monongalia County".

It was effective as of 3:00 p.m. on Sunday per the request of Mecca 911 Director, Mike Wolfe.

According to a press release, the declaration is due to heavy snowfall that has caused multiple accidents, extremely hazardous roadway conditions, and the possibility of widespread power outages with heavy wet snowfall.

It is expected to continue over the next 16 hours, according to Wolfe. The declaration allows the county to request assistance if needed from the state government.

"This is simply the first step in preparing our county for what is expected to be the largest snowfall of the season. We are also working closely with each of our municipalities and expect them to follow suit" said Mike Wolfe, Director of Homeland Security Emergency Management Agency and MECCA 911.

This declaration does not have any effect on travel or closures. Emergency officials highly recommend motorists to only travel if absolutely necessary, according to officials.

"We could start seeing the potential of emergency vehicles not being able to make it to places where 911 calls are received. In that case, we would request National Guard assets or larger four wheel drive vehicles from the state to access people that are in need," Wolfe said.

Also, West Virginia University's main campus has canceled all classes and operations on Monday.

Some University operations will continue to function, including dining services, residence halls, roads and grounds and other essential operations; however, the PRT and buses are not operational. WVU will attempt to keep the Library, Student Rec Center and Mountainlair open on Sunday and Monday, as personnel allows.

All classes and operations are expected to resume Tuesday, unless weather conditions dictate otherwise.
