WORTHINGTON -

Representatives from the town of Worthington attended the Marion County Commission meeting on Wednesday to discuss extending its town boundaries to welcome three new businesses.

Worthington passed a resolution on Feb. 17 to submit an Application for Annexation to the Marion County Commission to get the process started.

It is hoping the commission will grant its request to annex 43.28 acres into the town. The territory is contiguous to the corporate limits of the municipality.

Mayor Sandra Hulsey said J&J Auto Repair, Dollar General, and Thompson Incorporated approached the town and asked to be annexed in.

Five people also reside within the territory, and Mayor Hulsey said everyone was on board.

The annexation would provide both police and fire protection.

"We're still not going to be able to afford full time police protection because our town is so tiny. But it's still possible," Mayor Hulsey said. "We have already talked to Monongah's mayor about getting, like a co-op thing with their police where we can share the expense."

A public hearing will be held on April 2 in the Marion County Commission Chambers.

If the annexation is approved by the County, the Town of Worthington will provide police protection and street maintenance services to the businesses and people residing within the given territory.

It will have no adverse impact on fire protection and fire insurance rates, according to the town.
