College Spotlight: FSU Baseball, Bridgeport Rec Complex Ink 1-Year Deal

BRIDGEPORT -

The Fairmont State baseball team has a new home. The Fighting Falcons will be playing their 2014 campaign at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex.

"Currently, it's a one-year deal, and we'll see how this goes this year. I expect that it's going to be a wonderful partnership. The Bridgeport folks and the Harrison County folks have opened their arms to us, and we're certainly proud of the relationship."

Previously, the team had been included in discussions to play at West Virginia University's new baseball stadium in 2015…
but they say the deal with Bridgeport was hard to pass up.

"It was never officially in the planning stage. I think that was an option that we were very thankful for that Oliver had given us the chance to participate in that and we're certainly thankful for that. But another opportunity emerged that made more sense for Fairmont State."

"Even if this is just a temporary home for the Falcons, it's a win-win for both sides. The eight-million-dollar facility is only in its third year of use, and it helps bring collegiate baseball to the people of Bridgeport."

"It's a great opportunity for Bridgeport. It's a great opportunity for the younger kids that play baseball come in and see a collegiate team come in. The younger kids' aspirations might be to play collegiate baseball."

Neither McNeely nor Burton would rule out a more long-term relationship between the university and Bridgeport.

"It's just for this year, but I could see that expanding for future seasons."

The next few months will tell if the two sides were able to strike the right deal.
