Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. announced March 13 it will make a total of $181,000 in donations in 2014 through its charitable giving arm, the Cliffs Foundation.

"Cliffs Natural Resources is committed to the communities in which we operate and these contributions are an example of that commitment," said Cliffs' Public Affairs Coordinator Ryan Thorn. "The partnerships we've built through the years continue to have a positive impact on the people and the communities in Southern West Virginia, and we look forward to building on that good work this year."

Among the highlights of the foundation's contributions of the year are:

  • $40,000 to Buffalo Creek Elementary School for technology in the classroom and construction of an outdoor learning center;
  • $27,500 to Big Creek People in Action to help purchase a new van, to fund an after-school program and to sponsor a community baby shower event; and
  • $20,000 to Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College for technical education scholarships.

The Cliffs Foundation focuses on four primary areas to benefit communities, including: education, health and human services, cultural resources and civic-related projects. The foundation gives priority to organizations that operate within Cliffs' areas of operation.

The foundation will accept grant applications from qualified 501(c)(3) organizations until June 1 for consideration of its 2015 budget.

Cliffs Natural Resources operates Pinnacle Mining Complex in Wyoming County, the Cliffs Logan County Coal operations in Logan County and the Oak Grove mine and Concord Prep Plant in Alabama.
