American railroads reported an increase in coal loadings last week, although total coal traffic remains down compared with a year ago.

Overall, the nation's railroads reported 114,142 coal car loadings for the week ending March 15, up 2.5 percent from a year ago, according to the Association of American Railroads. That does not include U.S. operations of CN and Canadian Pacific.

CSX, one of the two Class I railroads operating in West Virginia, reported its loadings were up three-tenths of 1 percent for the week to 23,262. So far this year, CSX has reported 222,652 coal loadings, down 3.8 percent from last year.

Norfolk Southern, the other Class I railroad, reported total system loadings of 25,568 for the week, down 4.8 percent for the week. For the year to date, NS reported 238,814 carloads, down about 15 percent.

CSX announced this week that it will release its first quarter financial and operating results after the market close on April 15.
